Pediatric Critical Care Fellowship

The Children’s Regional Hospital at Cooper University Hospital offers a three-year, ACGME-accredited fellowship program in Pediatric Critical Care Medicine. Positions are available for one trainee at each year of training. Cooper University Hospital is a regional pediatric intensive care unit referral center and a Level I Regional Trauma Center with a pediatric commitment that offers a comprehensive approach to critical care medicine for children. Our subboard- certified pediatric intensivists emphasize a multidisciplinary approach to critical care.

This fellowship is designed to provide the trainee with the knowledge, technical skills, and clinical judgment needed to provide optimal care for all children who are critically ill. These goals are accomplished through a combination of hands-on experience, formal teaching conferences, and physiology-oriented teaching rounds. The fellowship is designed to prepare the board-eligible or board-certified pediatrician for a career in either an academic setting or a more clinically oriented environment.

Our Pediatric Critical Care Center has 6 intensive care, 8 intermediate care beds, with a total of more than 1,000 admissions to these units last year. Our fellowship program includes training in a wide variety of subspecialty areas, with emphasis in:

  • Anesthesiology
  • Pulmonary/Respiratory Care
  • Postoperative Cardiothoracic/Neurosurgical Care
  • Hemodynamic Monitoring
  • Sedation
  • ICU Administration

  • Pre-Hospital Transport & Emergency Care
  • Trauma Care

Clinical responsibilities during the fellowship include 12 months in the PICU. Additional clinical rotations include pediatric cardiothoracic surgery, adult medical intensive care, pediatric burn unit, pediatric transplant unit and anesthesia. A minimum of 12 months of the fellowship is devoted to clinical and basic science research. An introduction to basic research methods is provided, and fellows are offered a course in clinical biostatistics and experimental design. All fellows are expected to pursue at least one basic science or clinical research project that will lead to presentation at major medical meetings & ultimately publication in a peer reviewed journal.

The division’s ongoing basic science research includes investigations pertaining to endogenous mediators of shock. Areas of clinical research include status asthmaticus, RSV infection, pediatric head injury, pediatric ventilation, pulmonary mechanics, sedation monitoring, emergency airway management, and central line placement. Research facilities are available on site. Research activities are supervised by the Division of Pediatric Critical Care in collaboration with Ph.D. faculty and adult Critical Care.

As a regional referral center for the Delaware Valley, our facility regularly receives children who are transported here via air or ground accompanied by a critical care transport team that includes emergency transport nurses. Pediatric Critical Care Medicine fellows supervise critical care transports, thereby gaining valuable experience in the management of regional referral systems.
