What Is Sickle Cell Disease?
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited disorder of the red blood cells caused by genetic factors. Instead of round red blood cells, individuals with the sickle cell condition have crescent-shaped cells. These cell formations will at times block blood flow, which can cause pain and loss of function of that part of the body.
Sickle cell anemia occurs when the individual inherits the trait from both parents, leading to a more advanced form of the disease (Hgb SS). There are also other forms of sickle cell disease: Hgb SC and Hgb SB-thal. Individuals can also inherit the sickle cell trait, which is not a disease.
The hematology and medical oncology team at MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper specializes in the diagnosis, treatment, and medical management of all types of cancers and blood disorders, including sickle cell disease. Patients receiving care from the Sickle Cell Program benefit from this specialized expertise.

Advanced Treatments
- Blood transfusions: Blood transfusions decrease the proportion of sickle cells in the bloodstream by supplementing them with healthy red blood cells.
- Medications: Oral and intravenous medications are often used in SCD treatment to manage pain, reduce complications, and improve quality of life for patients.
- Red blood cell exchange: During red blood cell exchanges, the patient’s sickle cells are removed and replaced with healthy red blood cells.
- Advanced orthopaedic options: SCD can cause musculoskeletal complications. Orthopaedic treatment options include joint replacement and injections to relieve pain and improve bone healing. If a patient develops osteonecrosis, core decompression may be used to relieve pressure within the bones stimulating blood vessel production to ease blood flow throughout the area.
- Specialized neurologic care through Cooper and Inspira Neuroscience: Due to its impact on blood flow, oxygen delivery, and potential cerebrovascular complications like stroke, SCD can lead to significant neurological implications. Effective neurological management is essential to providing comprehensive care for patients.
- Clinical trials: Our Sickle Cell Program is active in leading new research aimed at achieving innovative outcomes in the treatment of SCD.
- Genetic counseling: Genetic counseling can help you consider the risks, benefits, and limitations of genetic testing as it relates to your circumstances. Our genetic counselors will review your personal and family history to assess potential future risk for SCD.
