When you’re admitted to the hospital, you may receive care from a hospitalist – a physician who specializes in treating patients during their hospital stay. Hospitalists are always onsite (“in house”) and available, allowing them to respond quickly to changes in your condition and coordinate care efficiently across teams.
At Cooper University Health Care, our hospitalist program ensures that you receive consistent, expert medical care from admission through discharge.
What does it mean to be admitted to a “teaching hospital?”
As the clinical campus of Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, Cooper University Hospital is a teaching hospital. This means that in addition to your attending hospitalist, your care team may include:
- Residents – licensed physicians receiving advanced training
- Interns – first-year residents
- Medical students
All care is supervised by a board-certified attending hospitalist. We believe that a teaching environment enhances patient care by encouraging collaboration and the use of the latest medical practices.
Who will be caring for me?
After you are admitted to the hospital, you will meet the primary medical team assigned to your care. Your attending hospitalist will give you his or her business card. In addition, the nursing staff will know which doctors are caring for you.
During your hospitalization, you should feel free to ask what role other doctors have in your care. Depending on the length of your stay, our primary team of doctors may change during your hospitalization and we ensure any new team of doctors is fully informed about your medical issues and care plan.
Who will talk to my family while I am in the hospital?
With your permission, your hospitalist will update your family about your condition and care plan. This conversation may be led by the attending physician or by another member of the care team, such as a resident or intern.
What happens when I am discharged?
As a partner with your primary care doctor, your Cooper hospitalist is committed to keeping your doctor informed about the details of your hospitalization. Your Cooper hospitalist will:
- Provide you with prescriptions and follow-up instructions
- Communicate directly with your primary care provider
- Send a discharge summary outlining your diagnoses, test results, treatments, and medications
